Fluoroquinolone Toxicity Syndrome

Fluoroquinolone poisoning can be caused by antibiotics. It can result in serious side effects like nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, depression, and psychosis. Floxing may also refer to this.

Avoiding fluoroquinolones is a good idea when patients have experienced dangerous side effects with an antibiotic with a fluoroquinolone or quinolone before. Special consideration should be used when a patient is elderly, suffering from kidney diseases and those having had an organ transplant.

Nearly all quinolone antibiotics employed are fluoroquinolones which have a fluorine element in their chemical structure . They are effective against Gram-positive and Gram negative bacteria.

Fluoroquinolones “kill bacteria” by blocking enzymes which normaly break up DNA as cells replicate. These enzymes cut DNA’s double-helix to pass another portion through the gap to finish the cut.

However, quinolones are able to bind to enzymes, preventing them from making repairs. Researchers added fluorine atoms during the 1980s to the structure of the quinolones. This allowed the antibiotics to penetrate tissues throughout the body as well as the central nervous system and enhanced their effectiveness against a vast range of bacterial diseases.”

Fluoroquinolones can prove useful in certain diseases, sometimes life-threatening, in cases where other antibiotics aren’t efficient.

But, fluoroquinolones are often overused just like other antibiotics. Many serious side effects have been related to them through the years, and several warnings from the FDA restrict their usage. Many label modifications have been needed and certain fluoroquinolones carry warnings on the black box.

These medications include Ciproofloxacin (Cipro), gemifloxacin (Factive), Levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), and ofloxacin (Floxin).

Signs and Symptoms

Fluoroquinolone-based drugs have been linked to some potential serious, long-term and permanently limiting side effects, including the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and musculoskeletal system. Ciprotoxicity signs include:

– DNA damage and mitochondrial dysfunction

– Brain fog

– Peripheral Neuropathy

– Blurry Vision

– DNA Damage

– Depression/anxiety as a result of Gaba and Gaba as well as Gut Damage

– Tendonitis

– Muscle Atrophy

– Reflexes are now more intense.

Tendonitis, low back pain and tendon rupture are the first signs of Ciprotoxicity. Fluoroquinolones can increase the risk of developing peripheral neuropathy 47 percent in the course of time.

Ciprofloxacin was shown to affect mitochondrial DNA’s topology and prevent normal transcription and maintenance. Tendinitis and tendon rupture may result from the damage caused by mitochondria to tenocytes following fluoroquinolone treatment. It could also lead to inflammation or fatigue.
