Come see a great day of
Ballroom dancing at the
"MidSummer Championship Competition" presented by the SouthernStar
Chapter of USA Dance.
After the competition, if you are looking for more excitement, stay for the catered dinner, the chance to try a little dancing yourself at the evening dance, and finally watch honor dances from the day's big winners!
GREAT DAY - GREAT DANCING - GREAT FUN!
Here are the particulars:
The competition will be held on July 26th, 2008 at the Rhapsody Ballroom located at 12101 North 56th Street in Tampa. For a map to the Rhapsody Ballroom, click here.
The competition will run from 9:00 in the morning to about 6:00 in the afternoon with an hour break for lunch at about 12:00 noon. There will be all four major disciplines of Ballroom dance represented with competency levels ranging from beginners to championship level, along with all age groups from Youths to Seniors.
American Rhythm 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM American Rhythm includes the Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Mambo, and Bolero. These are all Latin dances that vary from the fun quick Cha Cha and Mambo, to the sensous Rumba, and the beautiful, slow Bolero. And of course, every one enjoys the classic East Coast Swing. |
|
International Latin 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM International Latin includes the Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive. These are the five Latin dances that are danced around the world in competition. Once again the Cha Cha is a fun, quick dance. The Samba is a quicker Latin dance with a driving rhythm that is very infectious. The Rumba is very romantic and sexy, while the Paso Doble is very dramatic - depicting a matador and his cape. Finally, the Jive is similar to the swing, only much faster. |
|
American Smooth 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM American Smooth has only four dances. They are Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. American Smooth is the type of dancing that Fred & Ginger made famous. It is a very flowing style of dance with beautiful arm styling and lots of figures with the couple dancing apart. |
|
| International Standard 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM International Standard has five dances, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, & Quickstep. International Standard is the type of dance that is competed all over the world. It is in some ways simpler than American Smooth in that the partners always dance in a closed position, but it is an incredibly beautiful, elegant, and moving dance style. The Waltz is a beautiful, swinging dance. The Tango, of course, is very dramatic and low to the ground. The Viennese Waltz has basically only two steps, but it is extremely beautiful in its simplicity. The Foxtrot is as smooth as butter, and finally the Quickstep is fast, and flys, and is loads of fun both to dance and watch. |
|
After the competition there will be a catered dinner starting at 6:00 and finally there will be a social dance from 7:30 to 9:30 with lots of great music and a short show consisting of honors dances from each of the winners of each of the four disciplines explained above.
